Supervision as the central pedagogy within most graduate programs, is best enacted through intentional strategies aimed at supervisory skill building that are connected to graduate student milestone completion. Recent national discussions have demonstrated a shared passion for supporting graduate supervision as a distinct pedagogical skill of the graduate educator. Many supervisors enact this pivotal role in the absence of opportunities to build or reflect upon their pedagogical approaches and have only their lived experience to guide them in this role. Communities of Practice (COP) have as their central tenet, the fostering of collective learning through critical reflection and the sharing of resources. They bring together groups of people who share an area of passion or concern, so that they might exchange ideas and strategies aimed at improved role enactment and enjoyment. As a first step, today’s discussion will focus on the potential to develop a national COP on Graduate Supervision, with the goal of bringing together the pockets of innovative supports and services across Canada.
