The transition from graduate school to the workforce is a challenging and often uncertain journey, demanding substantial planning and preparation. It's a path that many of us have walked, and we understand the considerable time and energy it takes to ensure a smooth and successful shift into our professional careers. We've learned that critical techniques for succeeding in the workforce include effective networking, continuous skill development, strategic job searching, and resilience in the face of setbacks. Karine Coen-Sanchez will share critical techniques, focusing on the unique experiences of Black, Indigenous, and racialized students.
Drawing from her journeys as former graduate student and early career professionals, the speaker will address the importance of mentorship and supervision in guiding career decisions. Karine Coen-Sanchez will discuss the pros and cons of networking, emphasizing that while it is a powerful tool for career advancement, it is only sometimes merit-based and can sometimes lead to inequities. She will also explore how students can apply their research skills to various sectors, balancing leadership roles and academic achievements without relying solely on merit-based criteria.
Understanding the power of networking and not restricting oneself to academic work is crucial. Building relationships should become a cultural practice, helping to shift from the academic world to other sectors. The speaker will also offer advice on deciding on the right career path and when to accept or decline opportunities.
Universities play a significant role in promoting and encouraging professional development. By offering resources and fostering an environment that supports career exploration, they can help students prepare for diverse career paths. This support is crucial in the often challenging transition from academia to the professional world, and it's a role that universities take seriously.
This session aims to equip attendees with strategies for building sustainable and meaningful careers, fostering resilience, adaptability, and professional growth.
